Cambridge police are collecting foreign-language books for people to read while they're locked up. According to one of the papers this week, they're "trying to build up a collection of books for prisoners in our custody suites". Yes, "custody suites". Really.
They're particularly after books in Arabic, French, Portugese, Russian and Spanish. Between us, we must have have interesting books in all those languages - wouldn't it be great to get people reading them in their cells!

Reminds me of the book "Snowcrash" by Neal Stephenson. In the future, govt is run by mafias in competition with states, and you have a "choice" of which jail you get slung in when you're busted, with different systems having reputations for better food or beds, etc.
It sometimes feels like we're being dragged into a dystopian future of smiling jailers armed with tasers.
Book collection is a great idea. I've got a pile of old paperback novels in Spanish for Parkside.
