cambridgedating.com and political censorship

anon | 13.05.2005 20:44 | Cambridge

It appears that cambridgedating.com, a (currently) free online dating service for people in Cambridge, has a policy of not allowing the posting of "anti-government" material.

Their terms and conditions are at  http://www.cambridgedating.com/terms.php, and contain the following paragraph:

5. User Undertakings

[...]

iii. You agree that you will not use the Web Site to engage in any form of harassment or offensive behaviour, including but not limited to the posting or sending (on or off the Web Site) of word content, communications, messages, pictures or videos which contain libellous, slanderous, tortious, sexually suggestive, anatomical, abusive, threatening, privacy invading or defamatory statements, or racist, religiously imflammatory, ***anti-government***, obscene, pornographic, or offensive language or images.

(emphasis mine)

In other words, I'm not allowed to describe the strength of my political views in my profile, despite the fact that they are an important part of any description of who I am.

I hope this is just one reactionary site, and not part of a trend towards the marginalisation of anyone with anti-establishment views in the online world...

If you'd like to let them know what you think of this policy, their feedback form is here:  http://www.cambridgedating.com/contact.php :)

You will need to present some evidence that their policy is being implemented in the way you imply.

"In other words, I'm not allowed to describe the strength of my political views in my profile, despite the fact that they are an important part of any description of who I am."

DESCRIBING the strength of your political views is NOT the same thing as if you choose instead to provide an example. Saying "I like a good beer" is not the same thing as downing a pint and then smacking your lips. So when they say (to take an item from the list) "pornographic" is excluded do they mean that you can't SAY (in describing yourself)that "I get turned on by pornographic videos" or more reasonably are prohibiting "here's the kind of video I like to watch" (and providing an example).

Since you are asking for our support you need to make this clear. What did you do that they rejected? Are you trying to tell us that they objected to your description of yourself as a political activist of some kind? Or was it that you posted a political statement claiming that this was "description by example".

So you don't like this dating site - use another. There are plenty.
