The town of Beit Sahour, near Bethlehem, is famous for its traditional crafts: beautiful olive wood carvings, mother of pearl jewellery and rich embroidery. Products include religious items such as scenes of the Nativity and the Last Supper.
Some 120 family workshops in the town produce this work through traditions passed down through the generations. But owing to the present situation, the economy is suffering through the disappearance of the tourist trade. Here in Cambridge Market is an unusual opportunity to buy some of these crafts and to meet the craftspeople themselves.
