Vigil against the Wall

jupiter | 09.11.2003 18:08 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Cambridge

At least sixty protesters in Cambridge urged Israel to tear down the Wall that is being built and to stop the escalation of hatred and violence.

End the land grab!
End the land grab!

Build peace not this wall

Freedom for Palestine
Freedom for Palestine

In front of the Guildhall on Sunday afternoon, a silent vigil spelled the words END THE LAND GRAB and FREEDOM FOR PALESTINE. The Cambridge University Palestine Society ( Palestine@cusu.cam.ac.uk) organized this peaceful expression of opposition to the Israeli construction of a separation wall in the occupied territory of the West Bank. The 650 km boundary will consist of electric fences, trenches, watch towers, and in places an eight metre high wall. It is considered a land grab, because during the first phase of the project, 25% of Palestinian land will have been confiscated. This contains 80% of Palestinian fertile land and 65% of Palestinian water resources. The boundary is also creating a permanent prison for 500,000 Palestinians and effectively destroys the two-state solution.

There was also one Israel supporter handing out leaflets from the Cambridge University Israel Society.

Cynical revisionism

09.11.2003 18:29

Your attempt to equate the Israeli defensive anti-suicide-bomber barrier with the Berlin Wall is a cynical as it is spurious. And this "campaign" is an insult to all those in Eastern Europe who freed themselves from the yoke of socialism in 1989 through peaceful, democratic means. Terrorism has its price and that price which the "Palestinian" arabs pay will be the loss of their unviable rump state. Reabsorption of the remaining Arab territories in the Samaria, Judea and Gaza into Jordan and Egypt is the only solution.

terrorism DOES have its price

yes, terrorism of all types has a price, and the state terrorism perpetrated by israel over decades continues to feed palestinian hatred and causes the terrible slaughter of israeli innocents by indiscriminate suicide bombings.

the only answer is for the israeli people to stop supporting their terrorist government and to make real efforts to a peaceful solution by allowing the palestinians to tend their own lands in security without the endless persecution and encroachment that has led to the hopeless situation we now see.e

a quick reply

1. The report doesn't even mention the Berlin wall!

2. If this is a defensive barrier, why does it run straight through
Palestinian areas?

There is a limit to what can be justified in the name of Israeli security,
and that line was crossed a long time ago.

israeli society leafletting

More accurate to say there were five or six Israeli Society people handing out leaflets over the course of the whole hour. Their leaflets based a justification of the construction of the wall on concern for the Israeli victims of the resistance to the occupation.

A quick comparison of the two leaflets being given out: "Israel has no option but to sometimes site the fence slightly east of the 1967 border due to some narrowness of Israel's densely populated coastal plain. Israel has made it clear that the fence is not a political border, and will be removed when there is a partner for peace on the Palestinian side."; "During the first phase of the project, 25% of Palestinian land will have been confiscated. This contains 80% of Palestinian fertile land and 65& of Palestinian water resources. Upon completion of the wall's construction, some 55% of the West Bank will have been confiscated - land that is rightfully Palestinian".
