Cambridge March 29

800 people marched against the war in Cambridge today (29 March 2003), a strong showing despite the fact that many students have left town on end-of-term holidays.

A hastily-organized demonstration called by the Cambridge Campaign for Peace (CamPeace) and supported by other anti-war groups in town brought about 800 people onto the streets. The grey, funeral-like weather was the perfect complement to a day where many people woke up to find that the United States had (precisely) bombed a marketplace in Baghdad, killing 55 civilians.

The march was followed by a speaker's platform at the Guildhall. Quite a few people advocated civil disobedience in response to the latest killings, and the likelihood of a longer war seemed to be weighing on peoples' minds.
