J22: RECLAIM THE STREETS OF CAMBRIDGE! :-)

ACA | 07.06.2002 16:19 | Cambridge

THERE WILL BE A STREET PARTY IN CAMBRIDGE on June 22nd

It will feature happy smiley people and there will be positive vibes in the air.

There will be a street party in Cambridge on June 22nd.

Critical Mass, Sound system, Samba band, jugglers, fire eaters, and lots
and lots of happy smiley people all having a good time :-)

The idea is partly to make a statement against car-culture, and to reclaim public space - if only for a matter of hours - for the people.

...but mainly it's just an opportunity for those who oppose war, privatisation of public services, commercialisation of society, dominance of the profit motive, destruction of the environment, and corporate globalisation (or even just any peaceful friendly smiley people up for a party!) to come together and celebrate life in the streets of Cambridge.

Everyone is welcome! If you're not from the Cambridge area then hop on a train or bus and make it a day out.

Hope to see lots of you there on J22 :-)

i just can't wait to go.

what an exciting 'alternative' you are offering to people.

i can't wait to see how being smiley, fluffy, colourful, listening to the same old repetative beat music, juggling, drinking, drug taking etc., is bound to have the state a quivering and shaking in it's boots...again...yawn.

what ever happened to really challenging the state and the way things are run. is there not some thing else better to protest about in cambridge in this day and age?

the rightwing is making a come back and all you can think of organising is a piss up in town, pretty much what folk do every weekend.

reclaim the streets by all means but at least try to show that you have something else to offer.

fuck it let's have a party

Piss up? Drug taking? You said that, not me.

Participants are discouraged from bringing cans of beer and getting pissed and getting all leary and starting fights. That's why I included the "happy smiley" bit. "We don't want no trouble". Let's just celebrate life and being alive, but at the same time protest about everything that's wrong.

We just thought it would be good to do a reclaim-the-streets type event here in cambridge. What's wrong with that? Don't be such a miserable bastard :-)

Seriously, do try to have a little bit of fun in your life. It doesn't have to be deadly serious *all* the time.

Also, partly what this is about is a bunch of people organising a public event without bothering to go through all the usual hierarchical bureaucratic channels of getting permission from the council and all that. We refuse to recognise their authority because we think that rather than taking orders from above, people should do their own thing and organise their own lives and take the initiative to do positive creative spontaneous things without letting other supposedly superior people telling them what to do.

As far as protest goes, we're protesting against everything that this movement is against (you know, this movement that we're all part of). That very very very obviously includes protesting against the comeback being made by the right.

We think that the streets should be put to more positive use than just people being stressed out driving around in a hurry polluting the environment on their way to take part in the capitalist economy. Always in a hurry. And what for? Why not just have a party instead?

At the moment, the streets are full of people isolated from eachother, not talking to eachother. Let's try and have a bit more community spirit.

You may think there are more important things to do. But does that mean that we shouldn't bother? There are other things to do but we do those as well. We go to big protests, we do our own small local protests, we do internet activism, we do loads of stuff. We thought a street party would be really positive joyful event that the community could enjoy.

Stuff like Mayday is all very well but for this movement to grow we should try to get local actions like this going.

I don't see why you have to attack us and say that it's pointless and stuff. Are you the police or what?

I'm all for direct action but

I'm all for direct action but that doesn't mean I don't like to party, oppurtunities like this allow people meet, swap ideas, build friendships and the trust which often becomes the glue of affinity groups.

bugbear

a-shakin' and a-quiverin'

Um... actually the state will be rather concerned. They'll see it as chaos and a breach of the peace and a loss of their control over ordinary people.

Just think if everyone started doing this.

Would the state be soiling its panties?

You bet it would :-)

Street parties are great, I love street parties.
long live street parties

Besides, we can all sing the "you can shove your stupid war up your arse" song. That'll be LOADS of fun.

It's an opportunity...

09.06.2002 19:18

It's an opportunity for people in the movement to come together and feel the strength of our numbers and feel inspired.

It'll be really encouraging and stuff and we should be able to pick up some new ideas.

And we can convert loads of unpolitical people who just came because they thought it would be a fun afternoon.

Then we'll all go home, feeling energised and with our resolves strengthened, to carry on (with renewed determination) our daily battle against The Fucked-up-ness Of The System.

Come on, it's an anti-capitalist/anti-war/anti-corporate-globalisation party! In the street! In the sun! What could be more fun?

Let's all go :-) And let's bring banners and drums and stuff.

The protest movement is really kicking off in the big cities. It would be great to see something really big happen for the first time in a smaller town like Cambridge.

Local actions are the way forward. But at this early stage it would be great for loads of non-local people to go down to cambridge (on public transport of course) and offer our support, our encouragement and our solidarity.

See you all in Cambridge on J22! :-)
