Karen is the Chair of the UNISON Branch and a member of UNISON’s Health Service Group Executive.

Karen has been sacked by her employer for;

• Speaking out against NHS cuts and Privatisation
• Telling people she was being disciplined
• Protest her innocence

Karen has received fantastic support from her colleagues who are currently on indefinite strike.

Karen has been victimised and sacked from her job as a Community Psychiatric Nurse for speaking out against cuts and closures. Her colleagues are now on all out strike for her reinstatement and need solidarity and support.

Sunday July 1st. Anti-GM campaigns take protest direct to test site in Girton near Cambridge. One protester is arrested scaling the fence erected to protect the GM potato crop and another is arrested later on for alleged criminal damage.

People from all over the country are currently planting organic potatoes in the field proposed as a GM potato trial site outside Hull. It is hoped that the donation of safe spuds will prevent the planting of the controversial crop, which threatens the livelihoods of local borage growers and organic farmers.

Anna Lock explained;
“If you want to eat good safe potatoes, you have to plant good safe potatoes. By planting organic potatoes in this field today, the field will be rendered unsuitable for the GM trial. Scientific experiments need controllable variables, tiny organic seed potatoes hidden deep in the ground are a variable controlled only by nature. These seed potatoes will grow and BASF’s experiment will no longer be possible on this site.”

On May 3rd demonstrations and rallies against NHS privatisation were organised across country. At 10am, before the TUC-organised indoor rally in Leeds city centre, Leeds Keep Our NHS Public erected a 'for sale' sign in front of the Leeds General Infirmary, which is at risk of being sold off as prime city centre land.
