Pics from Arundel 2'nd bypass protest march

kriptick | 30.06.2003 01:29 | Ecology | Social Struggles

Protesters walked the proposed route of the second Arundel bypass which threatens to destroy a beautiful part of the South Downs, the river Arun water meadows and many acres of mixed forest.
The 2 last photos are VERY wide 360 degree panoramas and may take a minute or two to download. To see the entire picture, scroll them sideways using the thumb slider at the bottom of your browser.

This promises to be yet another hideously destructive and over the top road scheme. Arundel in West Sussex already has a bypass, this is to be a bypass of the existing bypass. The countryside around here is stunningly beautiful. The water meadows and river Arun will be crossed by a motorway on 30 metre high stilts. Productive farmland will be destroyed and a huge 300 acre wood of mixed oak, Scots pine, sweet chestnut, ash and hazel will be chopped in half.

A protest camp has been set up on the Southern edge of the woods that are under threat. They are in especially urgent need of climbing equipment - they only have one (womens) climbing harness between them - hard to put up rope walks and build tree-houses with only one climber safe in the trees at a time.

The 360 degree panorama still shots were made by stitching about 10 individual pictures together and the colour balance is a little chaotic in one. They are also quite large files but I hope you agree the effect will make the two minute or so download time worthwhile.

horror at a beautiful country turning into a concrete jungle

17.07.2005 05:09

my family had lived for centuries in binstead west sussex one of the most beautiful parts of the world.turning world heritage areas into concrete jungles in the name of progress is a cynical exercise in making money ,for whom? certainly not for those who live there, who wants a concrete jungle for a garden.if this continues there will be no habitat for birds and animals and none eventually for us, as human beings.when will this senseless destruction of our environment cease.dear old britain is looking more and more like a suburb of irak every day.where will britons live then.i would have first seen the sussex country side in 1934,i then had nothing to compare it with.then i thought it the most wonderful place on earth.since then i have been around the world several times.there is still no other place i would prefer to be.realities dictate otherwise for me as my family has now lived in australia since the 1950s .i still think of britain as home.i do hope that you will be able to save britain.Terence Hotston

Put in a funding application!

Brilliant to hear a camp has been set up. The countryside looks stunning. Thanks for posting these inspiring photos. Can you advise the camp to put in a funding application to Lush Cosmetics? Take a look at our website here:  https://www.lush.co.uk/our-values/charity-support and our funding guidelines are here:  https://www.lush.co.uk/content/view/393

Can you make sure that the camp and campaign are in touch with Campaign for Better Transport who are doing a great job at tracking all UK road threats:  http://bettertransport.org.uk/campaigns/roads-to-nowhere
